Johnson Development Services is cooking up a batch of homes on San Antonio’s Far West Side.

The Houston-based firm, in partnership with Heartwood Development Company, is spearheading an 800-acre project, with about 2,000 homes, at the massive Briggs Ranch master-planned community, the San Antonio Business Journal reported

The developers believe the project’s location — near U.S. Highway 90, and about 30 minutes from downtown — along with strong schools within Medina Valley Independent School District will add to the community’s appeal.

Construction is expected to start this year, with home sales set to begin in 2025. Highland Homes, Perry Homes, Toll Brothers and David Weekley Homes have been enlisted as the homebuilders for Briggs Ranch.

“These are some of the highest caliber production builders in the state,” Johnson Development president Michael Cox told the outlet. “Their designs will nicely complement the vision set for Briggs Ranch.”

The community is Johnson’s sixth and largest development in the San Antonio area, joining Cinco Lakes, Davis Ranch, Winding Brook, Willow Point and Overlook at Creekside.

Chesmar Homes, another Houston-based builder, also recently acquired a large chunk of land at Briggs Ranch, with plans to build 1,200 homes in the community.

The Far West Side stands out as the largest market for homebuilding in San Antonio, representing just over a quarter of total new home starts in the metropolitan area, the outlet reported, citing housing intelligence firm Zonda.

Elsewhere on the Far West Side, Lynd Living is building a 360-unit apartment complex just south of the intersection at Potranco Road and Loop 1604. Plus, Mosaic Development is plotting a 300-acre community with 1,000 homes in the area.
