A growing north Dallas suburb will be home to H-E-B’s largest store in North Texas, where it has increasingly expanded its presence in recent years.

The San Antonio-based grocer has started construction on a 131,000-square-foot store in Melissa, the Dallas Business Journal reported. It’s expected to open in summer 2025.

The project amplifies H-E-B’s effort to establish itself in Dallas-Fort Worth. It opened a store in Frisco in September 2022, with subsequent openings in Plano, McKinney and Allen.

The Melissa location, situated north of McKinney in Collin County, will include 24,000 square feet of attached retail space with a pharmacy and a True Texas BBQ restaurant. The project’s estimated cost exceeds $42 million, the outlet reported, citing a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

H-E-B already operates three stores in Collin County. It plans to open a second Frisco store in 2024 and start construction on a Prosper location later this year. In addition, the company is set to open stores in Tarrant County this year, including Alliance and Mansfield, as well as a Rockwall store in 2025.

The Melissa store, located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 75 and State Highway 121, is expected to attract visitors from neighboring states. Melissa Mayor expressed gratitude in H-E-B’s arrival, as the fast-growing town of about 17,000 has lacked a major grocery store.

Once operational, H-E-B aims to employ about 600 people at the Melissa location. In a gesture to the community, the company presented $5,000 checks to eight schools in the Melissa Independent School District during a groundbreaking ceremony.

H-E-B is also planning to open two Joe V’s Smart Shops — the company’s low-price concept — in Dallas.
