The family of the late philanthropists Fritz and Lucy Jewett are selling a 10,200-square-foot mansion on San Francisco’s Billionaire Row for $38 million.
Their son, George Jewett, has listed the four-story estate at 2990 Broadway, at the top of the famed Lyon Street Steps at 2990 Broadway in Pacific Heights, next to the Presidio, the Wall Street Journal and the San Francisco Business Times reported.
It’s the most expensive home listed this year in San Francisco.
The Jewitts, heirs to the Weyerhaeuser lumber fortune, built the four-bedroom, 10-bathroom estate in 1987, where they hosted such guests as Nancy Pelosi, former President George H.W. Bush and Britain’s Prince Philip.
The last house on Outer Broadway, designed by Sandy Walker, has sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headlands and Alcatraz. It’s on the market following the death of Lucy Jewett last year at age 94. Her husband Fritz died in 2008.
George Jewett III took over ownership of the 0.2-acre property in 2010, according to property records.
The white mansion with curved bay windows has a grand entryway with a dramatic winding staircase, solarium, a full-service bar and a seven-car garage. There are numerous living rooms with 13-foot ceilings.
An outdoor balcony runs the width of the house, which has a gym and spa.
Brokers Joe Lucier and Stacey Caen of Sotheby’s International Realty hold the listing.
A home down the street from the Jewetts’ sold for a record $43.5 million in 2021, the agents said. The San Francisco luxury market has bounced back after several slow years following the pandemic, according to Lucier.
“The market has found its floor,” Lucier told the WSJ. “People have a higher level of confidence spending in the top end of the market than they did 12 to 18 months ago.”
The second-most expensive listing in San Francisco is a penthouse co-op at 2006 Washington Street, No. 10, near Lafayette Park, asking $35 million, followed by a four-bedroom, five-bathroom home at 290 Sea Cliff Avenue listed for $26 million.

Fritz Jewett had a long career in the forest products industry as a director of Potlatch, retiring as vice chairman of the board in 1999. He was a prominent San Francisco businessman, philanthropist and sailing buff inducted in 2005 into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame.
Lucy Jewett was a patron of the San Francisco Ballet, which she and her husband helped support during a financial crisis in the 1970s by paying some of the dancers’ wages.
