Cityview aims to build a 140-unit development in Downtown Walnut Creek.

The Los Angeles-based developer has filed plans for two six-story complexes at 1910 North Broadway in the East Bay city, the San Francisco Business Times reported.

They would replace a 6,400-square-foot commercial building that housed a state Department of Motor Vehicles office until closing in 2020.

The firm bought the 1.3-acre property in June of last year for $12.3 million.

Plans call for 140 apartments or condominiums above 2,500 square feet of ground-floor shops and restaurants. The building would feature floor-to-ceiling windows, large inset balconies and a rooftop deck, according to a rendering.

Cityview may be in no hurry to build the residential complex a half-mile from the Walnut Creek BART station and less than a mile from Broadway Plaza, a local retail hub.

While it has submitted a design review application for the homes, it also seeks approval to continue leasing the lot to Mercedes-Benz of Walnut Creek through 2025. The car dealership is less than half a mile from the proposed project site.

The Century City developer owns or manages several apartment buildings in the Bay Area, including 27 North, a 119-unit student complex near San Jose State University; and Arc Light, a 94-unit complex near Oracle Park in San Francisco.

Last spring, Cityview completed a 300-unit student complex near the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Last summer, Cityview filed plans to build 441-unit apartment complex in Westchester, north of Los Angeles International Airport.
