Kaiser Permanente is considering the conversion of an eight-story office building in North San Jose to medical use.
The Oakland-based managed care provider is looking to expand its medical services in the South Bay by converting offices at 1600 Technology Dr., the San Jose Mercury News reported.
Kaiser doesn’t want to alter the footprint of the 198,000-square-foot building, according to San Jose planners who provided details about a preliminary inquiry by the health care company. Any changes to create medical uses would occur inside the building, they said. If Kaiser proceeds, medical offices rather than a full-scale hospital would be the likely result.
Also, parking layouts and vehicle movements through the parking lot might be adjusted for medical needs.
GI Partners, a San Francisco-based real estate investment firm, owns the 21-year-old office building. It’s located down the street from the Kaiser Skyport medical offices at 1721 Technology Drive.
Kaiser officials declined to comment on the potential medical expansion in North San Jose.
“We have a standard practice of not commenting on rumors or speculation related to real estate transactions,” Kaiser said in an email to the Mercury News. “We can confirm that evaluating potential acquisition opportunities and acquiring real estate is part of our normal, day-to-day business operations.”
