Two New York brands, luxury apparel designer Thom Browne and the Saatva mattress firm are opening stores in San Francisco, a sign of optimism where retail has suffered from the pandemic and brazen thievery.

Saatva is set to open an almost 6,000-square-foot showroom at 128 Post Street this week, its first on the West Coast, the San Francisco Business Times reported. In nearby Jackson Square, Thom Brown is leasing space in the historic Yeon Building at 432 Jackson Street, marking its fifth U.S. location.

The moves come after Crate & Barrel said it would close its 36,000-square foot store at 55 Stockton Street at the end of the month. Other vacancies in Union Square include the 33,000-square-foot former home of Gump’s, the 22,600-square-foot Barneys and what was a 43,000-square-foot H&M. Despite the vacancies, the area has recently grown in popularity as other neighborhoods, such as the Design District, draw engineering and biotech companies.

Saatva is seeking to open as many as 40 locations, including Boston and West Hollywood, after focusing on online sales since its inception in 2010. Saatva’s new showroom was once home to Eddie Bauer.
