The LeFrak Organization is getting some heat for its ambitious plan to build 1,998 apartments on the Sixth Street Pier in Jersey City, according to Jersey Digs.

The condominium board of the nearby Mandalay on the Hudson building started an online petition asking Jersey City planning officials and the City Council to change the five-tower project.

The petition does not demand any specific changes, but residents have said they want LeFrak’s project scaled back, although they live in a high-rise waterfront tower themselves. They have collected nearly 1,400 signatures as of Tuesday afternoon and aim for 1,500.

Substantially altering the project might be an uphill battle — it largely conforms to the Newport Redevelopment Plan and the developer is requesting only minor variances from the city. It calls for a 39-story, 51-story and three 33-story towers on a site built by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company a century ago, NJ.com reported.

The Jersey City Planning Board is scheduled to review the requests May 4. [Jersey Digs] — Dennis Lynch
