East Hampton Town trustees approved a proposal from the developers behind the South Fork Wind Farm to run a 138,000-volt power cable to East Hampton via Wainscott Beach, according to Newsday.

The 7-0 vote moves the contested offshore wind farm project closer to reality. The proposal includes a $29 million community benefits package from the developers, led by Orsted U.S. Offshore Wind. The town board could vote on the proposal in the next few weeks.

Opponents of the project claimed Wednesday that the town trustees lack authority over Wainscott Beach and are preparing legal action to prove that. The development team filed a key joint proposal for the project with a New York state commission last week. [Newsday] — Dennis Lynch
