Distressed retailer J.C. Penney is closing 13 more stores in the U.S., including a location in Bay Shore. The closure of the property at the Westfield South Shore mall leaves the retailer with just one location left in Long Island, at Roosevelt Field mall in Garden City, Newsday reported. In all, J.C. Penney, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May, will have just 697 locations left across the U.S. On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that mall owners Simon Property Group and Brookfield Property Partners are said to be considering a joint bid to buy the beleaguered store chain, mostly out of self-preservation.
