UPDATED May 2, 1:00 p.m.: A spot is up for grabs at one of Manhattan’s so-called Good Buildings on Fifth Avenue.
Unit #12 at 960 Fifth Avenue hit the market this month with a $70 million asking price, according to a StreetEasy listing.
The prewar apartment has eight bedrooms and seven bathrooms, along with two staff rooms on the third floor of the adjacent 3 East 77th Street. Along with 11- to 13-foot ceilings throughout, the home has five wood-burning fireplaces and 10 windows with views of Central Park.
The seller is the estate of Anne Hendricks Bass, an oil heiress who died in 2020, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The Lenox Hill co-op is no stranger to $70 million deals. One of its penthouse units — purchased in 2014 by Egypt’s richest man, Nassef Sawiris — broke the record for the most expensive co-op ever sold in New York City. However, the building was upstaged just three months later when billionaire Israel “Izzy” Englander bought a duplex at 740 Park Avenue for $71.3 million.
Built in 1928 and designed by Rosario Candela, 960 Fifth Avenue includes a private, fully-staffed restaurant, in-house chef, rooftop fitness center and rooftop terrace among its amenities.
The building has housed a host of heirs to concrete, construction, toys, sugar and textiles fortunes and prominent financiers, including Toys “R” Us founder Charles Lazarus and his wife, Joan Regenbogen, and Sharmin Mossavar-Rahmani, a philanthropist and chief investment officer of the Private Wealth Management Group at Goldman Sachs.

Compass’ Alexa Lambert has the listing. Lambert placed second in The Real Deal’s 2022 ranking of the top new development brokers in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens with $518 million in closed sales across 70 deals.
Lambert is also the listing broker for the late Barbara Walters’ 11-room apartment at 944 Fifth Avenue, which hit the market last month with a $19.8 million asking price. She also brokered the $68 million sale of two penthouse units at the Naftali Group’s 1165 Madison Avenue.
