Major investors dish on their strategy for picking tech startups to back

The final morning of the three-day Future City executive retreat concluded with back-to-back panels on the tech revolution in leasing.

Founders and executives from companies Doorkee, The Guarantors, LEAP, Nestio and Vero participated in the first roundtable of the day. They discussed how technology-enabled systems could help multifamily owners and operators rent space in the aftermath of New York’s sweeping new rent laws, and where brokers fit into their services.

In the second panel of the morning, three major investors in technology startups shared their strategy for picking winners and managing their investment portfolios. The speakers were Lightstone CEO David Lichtenstein, Churchill co-founder Justin Ehrlich and seed investor K.P. Reddy of Shadow Ventures.

Previous discussions during the summit included how architecture is being disrupted by technology, how high-tech amenities are changing development, and a presentation delivered by Karim Khalifa, director of building innovation at Google’s Sidewalk Labs, on the future of modular construction.

The second annual executive retreat hosted by The Real Deal was held at the Baha Mar resort in Nassau, Bahamas. Attendees included Bentley Zhao of New Empire Real Estate, David Kramer of Hudson Companies, Doug Eisenberg of A&E Real Estate Holding, Young Woo of Youngwoo & Associates, Gil Dezer of Dezer Development, Jules Trump of The Trump Group, and Jim Whelan, president of the Real Estate Board of New York.
