If you’ve been on a subway lately, you know that New York City’s infrastructure is already beyond capacity. And guess what — the population is expected to rise from about 8.2 million to 9 million by 2040.

With that in mind, Crain’s asked 12 architecture, design and real estate firms to conjure some big ideas to deal with the projected crunch.

Their responses ranged from SLCE Architects suggestion of adding multi-use buildings to underused schoolyards, to Dattner Architects proposal to convert waste-transfer stations into eco-friendly fuel producers.
