Jason Halpern’s JMH Development filed plans for a 289-key hotel in Long Island City, according to a permit application filed with the city’s Department of Buildings on Thursday.
The 119,722-square-foot building will rise at 36-20 Steinway Street, part of a five-parcel development site along Northern Boulevard.
The five-story building will include a breakfast and bar area on the ground floor, a fitness center and offices, and 289 hotel rooms. While the application makes no explicit mention of a retail area, RKF has listed an 18,000-square-foot space for retail lease on the property, with potential to expand to 30,000 square feet.
JMH acquired the leasehold to the five commercial buildings, owned and operated by supermarket chain Western Beef, for $19.6 million.
Halpern’s firm was behind the redevelopment of a residential building at 184 Kent Avenue in Williamsburg prior to its sale to Jared Kushner who is converting it to condos. They are also behind the condo conversion at Brooklyn Heights Cinema and have properties in Cobble Hill and Miami.
Gene Kaufman is serving as the architect of record, the filing shows.
JMH and RKF could not immediately be reached for comment.
