Hudson Companies files plans for BK Heights library development

Condo tower will have 134 units, space for 27k sf library

Hudson Companies is moving forward with its contentious plan to redevelop the site of the Brooklyn Heights branch of the Brooklyn Public Library into a 36-story condo building.

The company, led by CEO David Kramer, filed plans Thursday with the city Department of Buildings to develop the tower at 280 Cadman Plaza West, now known as 1 Clinton Street.

Reaching 409 feet in the air, the building will hold 134 condos ranging from one- to four-bedrooms. Hudson will build 114 affordable rentals at 1043 Fulton Street and 907 Atlantic Avenue in Clinton Hill, according to New York YIMBY, which first reported news of the permits.

The Brooklyn Heights building will include 267,662 square feet of residential space, 931 square feet of ground-floor retail and a new library spanning 26,620 square feet on the first floor and in the cellar, as per the building plans.

Marvel Architects is the architect of record.

The City Council last month gave the go-ahead for Hudson to purchase the Brooklyn Heights library’s home for $52 million, despite vocal opposition from library activists and union workers.

Organized labor groups have formed a coalition called “Build Up NYC” to pressure lawmakers to require Hudson to use union labor for the project.
