The residential conversion of the historic Collegiate School campus on the Upper West Side is set to move ahead after receiving unanimous approval from the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission.
Landmarks approved the construction of a new 66-unit residential development that will replace the historic boys’ school’s current home on West 78th Street – which is located in the West End-Collegiate Historic District and required the commission’s approval.
The COOKFOX-designed project will be spread out over two parcels, according to Curbed, with both 260 West 78th Street and 378 West End Avenue currently occupied by Collegiate School.
The property is now owned and being developed by the Collegiate Churches of New York, which paid $125 million for the Collegiate School campus and filed plans for the nearly 200,000-square-foot residential conversion in August, as The Real Deal reported.
The Collegiate School, which is separate and autonomous from the Collegiate Churches of New York, is the oldest independent school in the country and counts the likes of John F. Kennedy Jr., David Duchovny and Savanna’s Chris Schlank among its alumni.
The school is building a new 10-story campus building at West 62nd Street and West End Avenue in Lincoln Square — having closed on the development site from Extell Development and the Carlyle Group for $25 million in September. [Curbed] – Rey Mashayekhi
