Extell Development head Gary Barnett has “categorically” denied reports that the company’s planned supertall residential tower at 217 West 57th Street will surpass 1 World Trade Center in height.

Reports on Monday claimed new renderings show that the building, also known as the Nordstrom Center, had added 20 feet to its height – bringing it to 1,795 feet tall and eclipsing 1 World Trade Center by 19 feet.

But Barnett has dispelled such claims, telling the New York Post that the tower “will categorically not be taller than 1 World Trade Center.”

1 World Trade Center’s pinnacle height of 1,776 feet was designed as patriotic message in wake of the World Trade Center site’s redevelopment after the September 11 attacks.

“When we were planning [217 West 57th Street], we decided that we were going to make it less tall out of respect,” the Post reported Barnett as saying last month.

The 1.2 million-square-foot mixed-use development at 217 West 57th Street will house a 200,000-square-foot Nordstrom department store as well as offices, a hotel and condominiums. [NYP]Rey Mashayekhi
