UWS landlord has been harassing rent-stabilized tenants: judge

Colorado-based Aimco won't be able to convert 69 affordable units into high-end apartments

Aimco, the owner and operator of the Tempo Building on the Upper West Side, will not be able to convert roughly 70 affordable units into high-end apartments after a judge ruled that the landlord had been harassing the low-rent tenants in the building.

In addition to the stabilized apartments, the building at 240 West 73rd Street also has 131 market rate units, according to the New York Daily News.

The Colorado-based Aimco ignored residents’ requests for basic maintenance and invented unpaid rent claims, according to a Jan. 5 ruling by the judge cited by the newspaper.

Aimco has a total of 204 apartment properties across the country, which are worth $5.9 billion. In a statement, the company said, “we are understandably disappointed in the City’s decision, which prevents us from upgrading the property for all of our current residents, but we cannot discuss the matter further for legal reasons.” [NYDN] — Claire Moses
