The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is taking another crack at transforming the historic TWA terminal at JFK International Airport into a thriving hotel.
As expected, the bi-state agency issued a request for proposals Friday from developers willing to lease Eero Saarinen’s modern masterpiece for up to 75 years, Crain’s reported. The Port Authority is seeking a company with the capacity to convert the property into a hotel within two years, according to the website.
Additionally, applicants must keep the terminal’s architectural attributes intact and commit to a conversion process and subsequent operation that are environmentally sustainable.
In September, a report surfaced and was confirmed that hotelier Andre Balazs would take on the TWA terminal project. But in January, his company, Standard International, announced that it could not reach a final agreement with the Port Authority. [Crain’s] – Tom DiChristopher
