The start of the condemnation process for a group of buildings near Barclays Center offers some hints about how Atlantic Yards construction could progress.

The gears are moving to clear three homes and three businesses along Sixth AvenueBetween Dean Street And Atlantic Avenue. Empire State Development told the Atlantic Yards Report the condemnations will allow work to move forward at the L Island Railroad Yard and the site of a planned 272-foot tower on Sixth Avenue between Dean and Pacific streets.

The Report speculates that the condemnation is moving forward because Forest City Ratner needs additional staging for construction on the arena block. That claim was not be confirmed.

Eminent domain is already approved for the properties, but the state has yet to make an offer, according to Atlantic Yards Report.

EDC also told the Report that site 5, currently home to Modell’s and P.C. Richard & Son, is not part of the current process, but is expected to be rolled into a future condemnation. A 250-foot building is planned for that site.

Work is already under way on the modular residential units at the B2 site at Dean Street and Flatbush Avenue. [Atlantic Yards Report]Tom DiChristopher
