The State University of New York board of trustees selected nonprofit Brooklyn Health Partners to run the beleaguered Long Island College Hospital in Cobble Hill.
The California-based hospital developer will operate a 300- to 400-bed hospital on the 339 Hicks Street site, according to its proposal. The medical facility would employ 2,000, bringing in existing and former LICH personal when the hospital reopens in about three years, according to the Wall Street Journal. The developer also plans to construct 1,000 residences, the Journal reported, with 30 percent set aside for affordable housing.
Brooklyn Health Partners will pay $250 million for the site, undercutting the Peebles Corporation and Witkoff Group’s agreement to pay $260 million, according to the Journal. The latter’s plan to operate an emergency room and urgent-care center on the site came in second in the board’s deliberations.
SUNY hopes to complete the deal by May 22, and will kick off negotiations with Brooklyn Health Partners Friday, according to the Journal. [WSJ] — Julie Strickland
