Annie Leibovitz sells West Village townhouse trio for $28.5M

Famed portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz has sold her three-townhouse spread in the West Village in a deal that totals $28.5 million, according to city records filed today. The home encompasses three addresses: 755 and 757 Greenwich Street, and 311 West 11th Street.

Both 755 and 757 Greenwich sold for $23.5 million, while the 11th Street property went for $5 million, public records show. The sale entered contract Nov. 22 and closed Dec. 18, according to the deeds.

Though the purchaser’s identity was masked in public records (and a call to the buyer’s attorney went unreturned by press time), one thing’s for sure: the new owner is a very lucky person. The home, a 40-foot-wide townhouse and a connected 20-foot guest house, has a combined 10,200 square feet. The spread includes a gated garden, original stoops and doors, and 13 fireplaces. In sum, there are seven bedrooms, 5.5 bathrooms, two guest suites, a library and a finished basement.

The home was most recently listed with the Corcoran Group trio of Maria Pashby, Joanna Pashby and Louis Buckworth for $29.9 million, as Luxury Listings NYC previously reported. They did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

But the Corcoran listing came after a brokerage switch. Brown Harris Stevens’ Paula Del Nunzio and Guida De Varvalhosa listed the spread for $33 million in December 2012, as previously reported. The asking price slipped to $29 million in April before it was taken off the market the following month.

Brown Harris Stevens declined to comment on the sale.

You may recognize some of Leibovitz’s work: She shot the iconic image of a clothed Yoko Ono being embraced by a naked John Lennon. A few years ago, she found herself $24 million in debt from unpaid taxes, an unfinished book deal, payments for renovations to her properties and tens of thousands of dollars in fees for outstanding rental equipment. But the issues have since been resolved, according to previous reports.

Leibovitz began combining the impressive spread in 2002, when she made the $4.2 million, two-building purchase of the Greenwich Street addresses. In 2003, she bought 311 West 11th Street for $1.9 million.

Leibovitz could not immediately be reached.
