On top of plans to sue the developers of luxury projects on the polluted Greenpoint waterfront, residents are fighting for a new environmental study to occur before work begins.

Almost 200 residents, flanked by state Assemblyman Joseph Lentol, signed a petition requesting that Gov. Andrew Cuomo order a study. They argue that developers Joseph Chetrit and David Bistricer’s plans for a 12-tower compound including Greenpoint Landing and 77 Commercial Street disregard environmental protections.

The city’s last study, done in 2005, showed no harm would be done by the construction, according to a spokesperson for the Chetrit Group.

Lentol said the study was based on “outdated data” because the landscape has changed a lot since then.

“The history of environmental abuse in the area should warrant an examination for the benefit and safety of the people in the community,” Lentol told DNAinfo. [DNAinfo]Mark Maurer
