The Durst Organization plans to kick start a composting program at the Helena building located at 601 West 57th Street, DNAinfo reported. And if it goes well, the program will spread to the currently under-construction West 57th Street residential building located next to the Helena, which is slated for completion in 2015.

The two buildings have 1,350 residential units between them, meaning that the initiative would be one of the city’s largest residential composting programs.

Composting is an effort to separate biodegradable waste so that its decomposition can be recycled for use in local soil and gardens. Examples include fruit peels, coffee grounds, used paper towels and meat.

The Department of Sanitation will remove the waste three times weekly, but in the short term, the waste will be brought to a city compost facility on Riker’s Island. [DNAinfo] — Zachary Kussin
