Mayor Bloomberg sued over proposed $554M waste transfer center on the UES

The controversial East 91st Street waste transfer station, which is expected to cost the city $554 million over 20 years, is facing yet another obstacle. The New York Observer reported that a group led by State Assemblyman Micah Kellner yesterday filed suit against Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the city Department of Sanitation and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Beyond demanding that a temporary restraining order be placed on the project, the group, which includes the Gracie Point Community Council and Residents for Sane Trash Solutions, also alleges that the mayor and his administration did not file an amendment to its Solid Waste Management Plan with the state DEC, the Observer said. Overall, their goal is to “force a new Environmental Impact Statement and a vote by the City Council on a new Solid Waste Management Plan,” the group said in a statement.

As The Real Deal has reported, the Grace Point Community Council previously filed suit against the state DEC in August 2009, but an Albany court threw out the case. [NYO]
