Steiner Studios expansion rising quickly at Navy Yards

Construction is progressing rather quickly at the new Steiner Studios sound stages for the Brooklyn Navy Yard, slated to be complete next spring, Brownstoner reported. The film and TV studio will add 11 sound stages and 280,000 square feet at Building 1, at 25 Washington Avenue, to its current 310,000-square-foot space at 15 Washington Avenue that includes five sound stages. Within the next 10 to12 years, Steiner expects to have about 6,000 people working at the studio.

The $90.5 million project also includes a venture with Brooklyn College for a 250-student graduate film program in Building 1, the first such program to be housed within an actual movie studio. The school is expected to open in the fall of 2013.

“Spider-Man,” “Sex and the City” and “Boardwalk Empire” are just a few of the movies and TV shows shot in Steiner’s Brooklyn studio. Steiner Studios Chairman Doug Steiner said he eventually hopes to expand the studio to 50 acres. The current expansion will bring it to 20 acres. [Brownstoner]
