Cleanup at the 17-acre site of the former Brooklyn Borough Gas Works is scheduled to be completed in early 2009, said National Grid, the electricity and gas company that now owns the site. Between 1995 and 1997, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation investigated the site and mandated remedial measures, including the removal of soil that contained lead and the creation of a buffer between the plant site and the nearby Coney Island Creek. The last cleanup measure — the construction of an on-site treatment plant to process liquids before they enter the nearby Coney Island Creek — will be completed early next year. No decisions have been made about the future use of the site.
