AcadeMir Pays $17M For Homestead Charter School

AcadeMir Charter Schools acquired its Homestead campus for $16.6 million.

The Miami-based charter school company bought the two-story educational building at 13330 Southwest 288 Street, according to a press release. AcadeMir Charter School of Math & Science had leased the 3.5-acre property since 2019 from the seller, an entity managed by Miami-based real estate investors Mario and Ramon Castellanos.

The same year, the Castellanos entity paid $5.1 million for the 43,520-square-foot school that was completed in 1988, records show. The building was previously occupied by Aspira Leadership & College Preparatory Academy. 

Academir, managed by Superior Charter Schools Services, has 10 other campuses in Doral, Homestead and southwest Miami-Dade County, according to its website.

In April, the same Castellano entity began construction of another charter school at 12400 Hainlin Mill Drive in unincorporated southwest Miami-Dade County, on a site that is also being leased to AcadeMir, records show. Between 2017 and 2020, the Casetellanos assembled that 3-acre site for $565,000. The investors also landed a $5.5 million loan to build the charter school in 2018. 

The planned K-8 charter school will accommodate up to 650 students, according to a press release from the lender at the time. 

In other South Florida charter school deals, two K-8 campuses in Broward County traded for a combined $38.2 million in November. Fort Lauderdale-based Renaissance Charter School acquired a 46,000-square-foot educational facility in Plantation and a 85,233-square-foot school in Tamarac. Renaissance financed the acquisition with $44 million in educational facilities revenue bonds and the company entered into 45-year ground leases with the seller, Charter Schools USA.

The previous month, in a $14.5 million in lieu of foreclosure sale, a Lauderdale Lakes charter school traded hands. Kansas City, Missouri-based UMB Bank, as trustee for bondholders, acquired the title to the 38,546-square-foot campus that was home to now-defunct Championship Academy of Distinction High School.
