Fort Lauderdale to spend $27M on renovation of public pool complex

The city also approved a 30-year lease to keep the International Swimming Hall of Fame museum at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex

Fort Lauderdale city commissioners approved a $27 million renovation of the 53-year-old public swimming pool complex on the city’s beach.

City commissioners also approved a 30-year lease at the complex for the International Swimming Hall of Fame museum, whose operators had considered moving it to California.

The city government expects to attract more swimming and diving competitions to the modernized public pool complex, built in 1965. According to the city, 10 world records have been set there.

The renovation project will mean new pools and spectator bleachers among other upgrades to the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic  Complex at 501 Seabreeze Boulevard.

Hensel Phelps Construction will build a new pool for competitive swimming and a new diving pool with a dive tower, plus a new grandstand with restrooms for spectators.

Hensel Phelps also will repair a training pool, resurface the pool deck, build sidewalks and a main entry plaza, and install a new water filtration system and new lighting.
