Pulte Group has proposed building 850 homes on a former golf course in the Oak Tree community of Oakland Park.

The 139-acre site is the former Oak Tree Golf Course, which closed about 10 years ago. Pulte will seek a rezoning of the property to allow residential development there.

In a recent meeting with the Oak Tree community of Oakland Park, many residents told Pulte representatives that they wanted to live next to a golf course and asked if a small one could be incorporated with the company’s planned residential development.

Butt Tony Palumbo, director of real estate acquisition for Pulte, told Oak Tree residents that the company wants to build homes only on the old Oak Tree Golf Course.

The National Golf Foundation last week released a nationwide report showing that 211 golf courses closed and 15 opened last year.

Marty Kiar, the Broward County Property Appraiser, said at least three golf courses in Broward have closed in the last five years and 45 are still operating. [Sun-Sentinel] Mike Seemuth
