NBA legend Alonzo Mourning and Housing Trust Group recently celebrated the topping off of the first phase of their affordable housing project in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood.
The developers held a playground ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday for the nearly $23 million, 84-unit Courtside Family Apartments. The project includes 10 one-bedroom, one-bathroom units; 53 two-bedroom, two-bathroom units; 21 three-bedroom, two-bathroom units and four live-work units.

Courtside broke ground in July and construction will be completed by August 2016, according to a press release. Mourning’s AM Affordable Housing was granted a 65-year lease for four acres at the Miami-Dade County’s Culmer Center in 2008 after the company won a bidding process for the project. Phase II will be for senior housing with 120 units and phase III will include 80 units.
Developers scored $21 million in financing for the project in April. Amenities for the first phase will include a computer lab, library, gym, basketball court and playground.
Housing Trust Group is also working on Wagner Creek Apartments, a 73-unit affordable housing project in Miami. The $22 million development, at 1501 Northwest 13th Court, is near the Miami River and the Health District. — Katherine Kallergis and Sean Stewart-Muniz
