A brand new Miami Beach home with a rich history has sold for $5.58 million, Miami-Dade County records show.
The approximately 5,000-square-foot spec house in Sunset Islands was designed by WHA & Associates, which formerly included architect William Hamilton Arthur IV. The home was modeled after a postwar “Umbrella House” in Sarasota.
Lang Baumgarten’s H4H LLC sold the waterfront home at 1520 West 21st Street. Baumgarten paid $1.88 million for the 8,700-square-foot lot in January 2014, according to Miami-Dade property records.
It features a concrete canopy that shades the home, four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a dining room, great rooms and a master suite that faces a 44-foot open-air loggia on the second floor. It was completed this year and on the market for $6.8 million, Curbed reported.
Jonathan J. Cox is the buyer, records show. Cox is founder and chairman of the Federated Companies, a vertically integrated real estate company.
Paul Rudolph designed the Sarasota home, which has been described as “one of the five most remarkable houses of the mid twentieth century” by Architectural Digest. The “Umbrella House” sold for $1.6 million earlier this year and will reportedly be preserved.
An earlier version of this story incorrectly named the architect and construction costs. WHA & Associates designed the home and it cost about $300 per square foot, not $150.
