Fort Lauderdale commissioners have postponed a decision on changes to the proposed aquatic center that could push costs up to $40 million.

The latest proposal would add $6.8 million to amend the design to allow diving competitions to be held in front of the main building and be visible to passersby. Costs could also rise another $450,000 for a diving platform and up to $2 million to place a more attractive façade on the parking garage, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

At a Tuesday workshop, commissioners tabled action until January pending the results of a feasibility study. The city previously approved $32.4 million in 2012 for the center and intends to finance the project out of a $78.9 million fund for beach redevelopment, the paper reported.

Located on Seabreeze Boulevard, the new complex would replace the current 50-year-old facility that also houses the International Swimming Hall of Fame. [South Florida Sun Sentinel]Chris Guanche
