Palm Beach County commissioners voted to initiate a review of the proposed 6,500-home Minto West development during Monday’s tense public hearing.

The commission’s 6-1 vote overturns a recent Planning Commission rejection of the review. Minto Communities wants the county to modify its growth rules by allowing the 6,500 homes on the former Callery-Judge Groves, where only about 3,000 residences are currently allowed. About 25 Acreage residents asked commissioners to deny the project review during the hearing.

Jess Santamaria was the only commissioner to vote against the review.

“My personal experience on projects where they say ‘Don’t worry, this is just the beginning,’ over 90 percent of the time it gets approved,” said Santamaria, according to the Palm Beach Post.

The next Minto West hearing is not expected until the Aug. 8 Planning Commission meeting. [Palm Beach Post]Eric Kalis
