Genting Group scales back plans for downtown Miami resort

After plans for a casino and resort on the Miami Herald headquarters in downtown Miami were shot down by legislators six months ago, the Malaysian firm Genting Group has finally returned with scaled back plans, the Miami Herald reported. Genting executives told the Miami Herald that the new plans call for a fewer than 500-room luxury hotel and two condo towers — the original plans called for a 5,200-room resort . The structures commercial spaces has also been downsized to no more than 100,000 square feet.

Genting is actively seeking a brand for their hotel and they plan to demolish the 13.9-acre bayfront site of the Miami Herald — which they purchased for McClatchy for $236 million in 2011— shortly after then have struck a deal. However, neither Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, nor Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez  have seen the new plans. [Miami Herald] — Christopher Cameron
