California is reopening barbershops and salons, but Los Angeles officials are holding back.
Gov. Gavin Newsom revised a set of coronavirus mitigation guidelines, allowing for indoor services to resume at hair salons and barbershops, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. The move comes two months after the state first reopened barbershops, along with bars, nail salons and massage parlors, before shuttering them in mid-July as Covid-19 infections increased.
The reopening is ultimately left to county governments and Los Angeles County officials plan to review the guidance before making any decisions.
The state has scrapped its earlier phased reopening system in favor of a four-tier system that Newsom called “stringent and slow.” Barbershops and salons are required to follow social distancing guidelines, limit capacity and require workers and customers to wear masks.
The new guidelines also allowed for limited capacity at indoor shopping malls.
“We have made notable progress over recent weeks, but the disease is still too widespread across the state,” Newsom said in a statement. “Covid-19 will be with us for a long time and we all need to adapt.” [LADN] — Dennis Lynch
