A homeless shelter in Hollywood could soon see the wrecking ball to make room for a different kind of shelter.

Nonprofit group Path Ventures filed plans to build a 60-unit affordable housing complex on the site of their existing shelter at 5627 North Fernwood Avenue, according to documents published last week by the city.

The affordable housing developer is requesting a 35 percent density bonus, as well as reduced yard and open space requirements, in exchange for building near the Hollywood/Western Metro station.

Architects Collective is designing the five-story structure, Urbanize previously reported. A Hollywood committee reviewed a preliminary proposal for the project in May.

Path Ventures is an affiliate of Path, which focuses on aiding the homeless. Some of Path Ventures’ projects include the Path Villas at Del Rey on the westside, Marmion West Apartments in northeast L.A. and Villas at Gower in Hollywood.

In Venice, where the homeless problem is particularly acute, a couple of affordable housing developers are planning a 140-unit complex on a city-owned parking lot. Nonprofits Hollywood Community Housing and Venice Community Housing recently filed plans to build a 105,770-square-foot project that would include office space and an art studio at 200 Venice Boulevard.
