The future home of the L.A. Rams and Chargers is now facing a delay.

The $2.6 billion Inglewood stadium was scheduled to open in 2019 but developers announced Thursday that it will be pushed back a year, opening in the start of the 2020 NFL season.

The project broke ground in November but heavy rainfall during the excavation phase caused a two-month standstill, its developers told the Los Angeles Times. Work was underway on an enormous hole where the stadium will eventually sit but at times, the site looked more like a lake with 12 to 15 feet of water, according to the L.A. Times.

The football stadium is expected to be the centerpiece of a 298-acre sports and entertainment district, which is being developed by billionaire Rams owner Stan Kroenke and Stockbridge Capital Group.

Developers said the project’s already ambitious timetable left little room for surprises. The initial plan only allotted 30 days off for rainfall.

For now, the Rams will remain in the Coliseum for the 2019 season and the Chargers will play its home games at AEG’s StubHub Center in Carson. [LAT]Subrina Hudson
