Marina del Rey-based developer TriCal Construction wants to build a 53-story hotel tower next to the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The company filed plans Thursday for the project at 1300 South Figueroa Street, which would comprise two separate hotels. The Gensler-designed complex would have ground-level restaurant space and banquet rooms, as well as a rooftop bar.

If its plans are approved, the city would be 1,024 rooms closer to reaching its goal of having 8,000 hotel rooms within walking distance of the convention center by 2020.

The site is currently occupied by a five-story apartment building known as “City Lights,” developed by TriCal 12 years ago.

“We desperately need more hotel rooms here to make our facility competitive with other convention centers on the West Coast,” Bud Ovrom, executive director of the Los Angeles Convention and Tourism Development Department, said in a statement.

There were more than 3,000 rooms within walking distance of the Convention Center area as of September and another 2,000 under construction. — Cathaleen Chen
