Kevin McCallister’s booby-trapped playground has traded hands for $5.5 million, marking one of Chicago’s priciest suburban residential transactions this month.

The “Home Alone” house, at 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka, sold this week for just under $1,080 per square foot, about 4.7 percent above the seller’s asking price of $1,030 per square foot, Crain’s reported

The 10-bedroom home was listed in May for $5.25 million. It quickly garnered attention and went under contract after a week, a sign of its allure even beyond its historical role in the beloved Christmas classic.

The buyers haven’t been identified but are eager to honor the legacy of the house, said their agent, Lori Nieman with @properties Christie’s International Real Estate.

The sellers, Trisha and Tim Johnson, purchased the property for $1.6 million in 2012, the first time the home changed hands since the film’s release in 1990.

The Johnsons put considerable time and effort into renovations. They increased its size by roughly 25 percent, bringing it from 4,000 square feet to 5,100. Their updates included enlarging the family room, adding an attached garage, and building an indoor sports court.

The iconic residence is the second high-end property to sell in Winnetka so far this year. On Jan. 8, a newly built six-bedroom home on Westmoor Trail sold for just over $4.67 million, or  $667 per square foot.

Another high-end home in Winnetka, a 7,500-square-foot estate on Hill Road, was recently purchased by Fox Sports broadcaster Colin Cowherd for $4.45 million, or $593 per square foot.

Winnetka is seeing increased demand for luxury homes, but not all sales result in a profit. Andy Weir recently sold his 13,000-square-foot mansion in Winnetka for $3.36 million. The sale, which closed on Dec. 30 for $258 per square foot, represents a 25 percent loss for Weir and his wife, Ashley, who paid $347 per square foot for the residence a year earlier.

Winnetka recorded 99 sales of $4 million or more last year, trailing just behind the 2022 peak of 136.
