A mansion on Locust Road in Winnetka is on the market for $9 million — the first time in over a decade the home has been listed for sale.

The property appears from tax records to be owned by David H. Hoffmann, a principal and founder of Osprey Capital, and the CEO and the chairman and founder of the Hoffmann Family of Companies. Hoffmann did not respond to a request for comment. The listing’s agent, Dinny Dwyer with Coldwell Banker Realty, declined to comment.

Hoffman Family of Companies has a large commercial real estate portfolio and has claimed on its website to be the largest property owner in Winnetka with 26 properties, as well as Naples, Florida, with 33 properties, and Avon, Colorado, with 13 properties.

The nine-bedroom, nine-bathroom home was built in 1931 and spans 9,000 square feet, according to its public listing.

Amenities on the over 3-acre property include a Tiffany skylight, wine cellar, home gym, library, a pool and a tennis court. The home was last listed for nearly $9 million in 2010. The listing has been off the market since then, according to its public listing data.

Hoffmann originally listed it for $10.5 million in 2009, before a series of price cuts brought it down to its current price before it was pulled from the market in 2010. It’s unclear why the sellers are seeking to offload the property now. Cook County records are limited on the property, as is information regarding when Hoffmann purchased it.

Just down the street, the 11,000-square-foot Winnetka mansion that belonged to Andrew McKenna, the Chicago Bears’ part-owner and former McDonald’s chairman who passed away in February, sold this summer for $5.7 million, within five days of listing and 99 percent of the full asking price. Built in 1931, that mansion was designed by architect Spencer Solon Beman and for George B. Everitt, the chairman of the Merchandise National Bank and the former president of Montgomery Ward & Co.

Hoffmann’s home was also originally completed in 1931, according to its listing.

Winnetka has been home to the priciest and second-priciest deals of the year in all of Chicagoland. An unknown buyer paid $12.25 million for a 10,000-square-foot house at 445 Sheridan Road.

The sale marked the second most expensive transaction in Chicagoland this year, slightly trailing the $12.5 million sale of the 12,000-square-foot estate at 691 Sheridan Road. For much of 2023, Ken Griffin’s Park Tower condo in downtown Chicago that traded for $11.2 million in January held the year’s priciest deal title.
