UrbanStreet Group is closing in on building the largest mixed-use campus in Schaumburg.

The development firm co-founded by Robert Burk and Robert Kuker got the thumbs up from Schaumburg’s zoning board to create The District at Veridian — a 30-acre development slated for over a million square feet of stores, restaurants, office space and 574 apartments and row houses, the Daily Herald reported.

The project would rise on the former Motorola campus, bounded by Meacham and Algonquin roads. It will be built along Meacham Road from the border of Zurich North America’s headquarters at Meacham and Interstate 90, and stretch north to Algonquin Road.

The developer is trying to land entertainment company Sports & Social as the anchor tenant of The District. Sports & Social has 11 locations offering high-tech audiovisual sports spectating events, as well traditional bar and entertainment venue games including bowling, table tennis, shuffle puck, darts, skeeball and foosball, and live music.

Burk expects to start extensive sitework by the end of the year, after the project encountered some delays attributed to the coronavirus.

“We obviously took a hiatus during the pandemic,” Burk told the outlet.

Zoning board chairman Harry Raimondi called the proposal “probably one of the most interesting developments I’ve seen in all my years here.” The village will vote whether to approve the project on June 13.

UrbanStreet’s plan calls for 178,400 square feet of retail space, 90,800 square feet of restaurants, 608,000 square feet of residential units, 80,700 square feet of office and 3.92 acres of open space. There would also be 528 surface parking spaces and four garages with another 2,524 spaces.

The development site is walking distance to Veridan’s 12-acre public park. UrbanStreet will build one quadrant of the project at a time, with plans to focus first on getting a retail and apartment building on the site completed.
