Kroger is coming to the Chicago area.

The Cincinnati-based grocery giant said it plans to build an 80,000-square-foot distribution center in Maywood, a village on the western end of the Chicago area, the Chicago Business Journal reported. It will help expand the company’s home delivery service in the Chicago area.

Kroger uses a 337,000-square-foot facility in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, located between Milwaukee and Chicago, to make home deliveries. The Maywood one will be on a site that once housed a Supreme Catering building at 1900 Maywood Drive.

Kroger said it expects to employ up to 180 people in Maywood, where city officials are supporting the new center.

“Their facility replaces a blighted area while adding new jobs and revenues that aid in the revitalization of our community,” Maywood Mayor Nathaniel George Booker told the publication. “We are happy to welcome a partner that works to address our food desert designation and look to evolving collaboration with them.”

A little over 30 miles away, near the DuPage Airport, developer HIP VI Enterprises LLC has been planning a “Geneva Logistics Center” of four warehouses on 75 acres at the northwest corner of Kautz Road and Geneva Drive. The speculative building will contain more than 23 loading docks and parking spaces for more than 145 trailers and 1,400 cars.

Further south, Wholesale beverage distributor Republic National Distributing Company pre-leased a 350,000-square-foot Class A industrial building under construction at 1301 Abbott Road in Romeoville.
