Fifield Companies plans a 188-unit rental complex in River West, adding to a growing number of rental projects in the area.

The Chicago developer secured a construction permit for the 12-story transit-oriented building at 740 North Aberdeen Street, which will also include 5,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, according to Curbed. The location is near the CTA Blue Line’s Chicago Avenue stop.

When it opens next year, the building will join other multifamily developments, including Bond Companies’ 363-unit Spoke apartments at 728 North Morgan Street and Tandem Partners’ 226-unit project at 730 North Milwaukee Avenue.

Fifield is in the process of building Logan’s Crossing development on the site of the former Discount Mega Mall in Logan Square. That project, in partnership with Terraco Real Estate, calls for 220 luxury apartments and 67,000 square feet of commercial space across two buildings.

The firm last year completed the 492-unit apartment tower at 727 West Madison Street, currently the tallest building west of the Kennedy Expressway.

The Aberdeen Street project will replace a parking lot and a vacant building owned by real estate investor John Kelly, who first got zoning approval to redevelop the site back in early 2017, according to Curbed. [Curbed] — John O’Brien
