The feud between landlord Mark Fishman and Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa has hit Fishman in his pocketbook — and not just from the overdue rent he says is owed him.
Entities controlled by Fishman contributed some $100,000 to the campaign of Amanda Yu Dieterich, who failed in a bid this spring to unseat Ramirez-Rosa for the 35th Ward seat, according to Block Club Chicago.
Fishman made the contributions from dozens of different limited liability companies and his real estate company, M. Fishman Company, according to Illinois State Board of Elections records analyzed by Block Club. His donations made up approximately a third of Yu Dieterich’s campaign fund.
Ramirez-Rosa won February’s election with nearly 60 percent of the vote.
Critics including Ramirez-Rosa have turned Fishman into the face of gentrification in the Logan Square area, and the two men have been at odds for years.
Fishman late last year evicted the alderman and State Rep. Will Guzzardi from their offices in a building he owns in Logan Square, claiming they owed him $42,000 in unpaid rent. He has taken the issue to court, suing Ramirez-Rosa for the money. [Block Club] — John O’Brien
