A Tudor-style mansion built in the 1920s for vacuum magnate H. Earl Hoover has hit the market in north suburban Glencoe for $15.9 million, becoming the priciest listing in the Chicago suburbs and one of the top overall listings in the region.
The 12.2-acre estate at 1801 Green Bay Road is the largest single-family residential property in Cook County, according to Dreamtown broker Hadley Rue, who is marketing the property.
The mansion was built with English hardwood floors, a sunroom and limestone fireplace. A greenhouse, terrace and “sunken garden” surround the main building, along with a coach house, stable house and eight garages.
Rue said the Hoover family’s emphasis on privacy meant “a lot of people weren’t fully aware of the property” and its vast tracts of undeveloped land, which could accommodate new construction.
A 25,000-square-foot mansion at 1932 North Burling Street in Lincoln Park remains the highest listing in the Chicago area, with a $50 million asking price.
In May, Pete’s Fresh Market owner James “Jimmy” Dremonas put his 11,000-square-foot Gold Coast mansion on the market in for $21.9 million.
