The redevelopment of the sprawling former Motorola Solutions campus in Schaumburg has its first tenant: A 67,000-square-foot Topgolf center.

The Schaumburg Village Board this week approved the Topgolf project on the 225-acre site owned by Chicago-based UrbanStreet and now called Veridian, according to the Daily Herald.

The village is reviewing what would be the second project in the redevelopment: a 260-unit apartment building north of the golf facility. And work is scheduled to start on a new road through the development that is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Topgolf will include nearly 24,000 square feet of outdoor hitting bays as well as a restaurant, lounge and banquet room.

The Motorola site is one of many sprawling former corporate headquarters that are blamed in part for high office vacancy rates in the suburbs, along with the GE Healtcare facility in Barrington and the AT&T campus in Hoffman Estates.

New Jersey-based Somerset Development, though, has plans to turn the AT&T site into a so-called “metroburb” like one it created on the grounds of a former Bell Labs campus in Holmdel, N.J.

High-tech Topgolf facilities are growing in popularity around the country, sometimes on the sites of existing traditional golf courses, where they’re viewed as a fresher, more modern way to draw customers.[Daily Herald]John O’Brien
